Graduate Research Areas

A wide range of courses and research topics are available. Individual programs of study are tailored to the student in consultation with the student's research supervisor and usually concentrate in one of the following areas:

Electromagnetic Systems - A broad range of research activities are supported including radar remote sensing, dielectric properties of natural targets, numerical modelling of radar backscatter, laboratory radar measurements, antenna design, propagation studies, microwave frequency circuit design, experimental industrial microwave heating and plasma generation.

Biomedical Engineering - Design and implementation of control systems for artificial limbs, bio-instrumentation, human operator modelling, biological signal processing, speech processing and robots in medical applications.

Communications – Wireless and fibre optics, sensors, powerline channels, algorithms in FPGAs, antenna design for communications, digital communications, equalization, multi-user detection, geo-location and networking.

Control Systems - Theory, design and implementation of control systems, digital control systems, real-time knowledge-based controllers, fault tolerant control systems, and multiprocessor implementation with applications in motion control systems, robot control, power systems and process control.

Electronics and Digital Systems - Design of interface circuits realized in CMOS VLSI technology, VLSI circuit simulation, modelling and testing, computer-aided circuit design, electronic instrumentation, fault tolerant system design, and real-time multiprocessor systems.

Digital Image/Signal Processing - Development of specialized digital hardware designs for image processing, development of digital signal processors for communication and control systems, estimation, detection and adaptive filtering. Networks - Fault diagnosis in large scale computational systems, probabilistic computational structures, digital filters, graph theory, speech and speaker recognition.

Power Engineering- Application of artificial intelligence to power system planning and operation, dynamic and harmonic stabilities of interconnected AC/DC systems, HVDC control and protection, efficiency enhancement and control of motor drives, alternate energy systems, digital protection of power systems, harmonic phenomena in power systems.
