Graduate Application Assessment

Thank you for your interest in Civil's graduate programs. The qualification requirements for the M.Eng., MScE, and P.h.D programs are below.  Please note that these are the minimum requirements for acceptance.  Spaces available are filled on a competitive basis as the number of graduate student positions available are limited so only the very best and most qualified will be considered for admission.

Grade (GPA) Requirements

The normal minimum requirement for admission as a regular graduate student is an honours bachelor’s degree (or a similar program with intensive specialization in an appropriate discipline) with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0.  The same level of degree with at least a “B” average (North American System) or upper second class standing (British System) is normally required for graduates of other universities.  (A guideline for a “B” average is a grade between 71 and 75.)   Copies of all transcript(s) must be included with application.

English Language Proficiency

All international applicants whose mother tongue is not English are required to demonstrate that they have a sufficiently good command of the English language to enable them to participate fully in the academic life of the University. This includes international applicants who are landed immigrants or reside in Canada.  This proficiency requirement will not be waived and must be demonstrated by one of the means listed below:

TOEFL scores should be no less than:

  • Paper based - 580 out of 677, TWE - 4
  • Internet based - 92 out of 120, reading/writing/spoken/listening (minimum is 23)
  • Computer based - 237 out of 300, essay rating - 4
  • IELTS - no less than 7.5
  • Michigan score - no less than 85%
  • CanTest - no less than 4.75

Include a copy of your GRE results if you have completed that exam.  GRE results are required for applicants applying for the Construction Engineering and Management area.

If you qualify and wish to apply please refer to the School of Graduate Studies website for application procedures.
