Deferred Exams

General university regulations on deferred exams can be found in the university calendar.  Please note that travel plans are NOT a sufficient reason to defer an examination.

For all courses offered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, deferred exams will be written on one of three predetermined dates, as follows (NO EXCEPTIONS):

Students deferring an exam in any Mechanical Engineering course in the fall term will write the deferred exam on the first Saturday after the start of classes in January.

  • Students deferring an exam in any Mechanical Engineering course in the winter term will write the deferred exam on the first Saturday after the start of intersession classes in May.
  • Students deferring an exam in any Mechanical Engineering course in the intersession or summer session will write the deferred exam on the first Saturday after the start of classes in September.

Exams will be at 9:00 on Saturday morning.  Students who have deferred more than one exam will write the second exam at 2:00 in the afternoon of the same day, with additional exams written in the evenings (7:00 pm) of the following week, beginning on Monday evening and continuing with one exam each evening until all deferred exams are completed.  In all cases of multiple deferred exams, the Department shall decide how many and which specific exams are written in which timeslot.

On rare occasions, due to scheduling of multiple deferred exams for other students, it may be necessary for a student to write a deferred exam in a timeslot from the above list other than the first one available to them.

If circumstances warrant, students unable to write a deferred exam in one of the assigned time periods may seek a further deferral based on the same documentation requirements as the "University Wide Regulations" cited above. Such documentation must be provided to the Chair of the Department by the registrar’s office. Granting of a further deferral is determined using the same rules and criteria as for the first deferral and will be written on the exam date of the next course offering.
