Revised Civil Engineering Calculator Policy
The UNB Department of Civil Engineering has adopted a policy regarding the use of calculators in exams and midterms, whereby only a limited number of calculator makes and models will be permitted. The purpose of this policy is to provide a level playing field for all students, and to prevent the use of calculators with text storage and/or communication capabilities. The list of permitted, or “standard” calculators is given below. They are all in the price range of $11 - $30. The specific regulation is:
In any Civil Engineering examination, midterm, or test, a student must not have in their possession any electronic device except an approved (“Civil standard”) calculator, unless such device is specifically permitted, in writing, by the instructor.
The term “electronic device” includes calculators, cell phones, PDAs, iPods, CD players, etc.
For students beginning the Civil program this Fall, the default policy is that on all Civil courses, only “standard” calculators will be permitted in exams and midterms. Some instructors may choose to waive this rule in specific courses.
