Course Grade Requirements and GPA

As of September 2005, all courses must be passed with a "C" grade or better.

Note that any approved changes made to the course grades or course credit hours apply only if you have not yet received credit for that course.

Note: The method of assigning a letter grade is defined by the faculty member giving the course and is to be provided to the student during the first two weeks of the course.

Summary of Standing and Promotion Requirements

Assessment GPA:

1.0 and less

Assessment GPA for returning students on Academic Probation:

less than 2.0

Assessment GPA for re-admitted (rusticated) students:

less than 2.0 2.0 and better
Leave UNB (final dismissal)
 Good academic standing

 

Notes:

  • Assessment period includes the entire academic year (May 1 to April 30) provided that 24 credit hours or more have been attempted.
  • Students can appeal to the Senate Committee on Student Standing and Promotions (SS&P) if they have been placed on Academic Probation (AP) or received a grade because of circumstances beyond their control. Students also have the right to request (within 90 days after the end of the examination period) a review of the final grade for any course.
  • Courses taken at other universities or colleges during the period of rustication cannot be used for credit at UNB.
  • If you are thinking of leaving the University or transferring to another Department, be sure to set up an appointment with the Chair of the Department or the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
  • If you leave UNB for any reason, be sure to formally withdraw.

How to Determine your Grade Point Average (GPA):

Grade Points = Credit Hours x Grade Point Weight

(For example, a B in CE 1023 gives: grade points = 4 (for credit hours) x 3.0 (for a mark of B) = 12.0)

The University calculates two grade point averages, an Assessment Year GPA calculated at the end of an assessment period (from May 1 to April 30 provided at least 24 ch have been attempted), and a Cumulative GPA based on all work taken towards a degree program.
