MEd admission requirements

In addition to the requirements listed in this section, applicants are responsible for consulting the specific degree options to which they plan to apply for any additional requirements.

Academic and experience requirements

Applicants to the MEd are required to:

  • hold a relevant bachelor’s degree or its equivalent
  • have a grade point average of at least 3.0 (B, or its equivalent)
  • have at least one year of teaching or related professional experience
  • have a background in the specialized area(s) of study to which they are applying (if not, makeup courses will be required)

Background experience

Adult Education: Two years of full-time (or related) experience with adult learners.

Educational Administration: Three years of teaching or related professional experience and previous leadership experience.

Critical Studies, Curriculum Studies, and Exceptional Learners: One year of teaching (or related) experience.

Counselling: One year of experience in some aspect of human service.

Applicants whose first language is not English

If your first language is not English, you must submit your results in a test of English as a foreign language.

The following minimum proficiency levels are accepted by the Faculty of Education for each type of test:

  • TOEFL 650 (280 computer-based)
  • IBT minimum score of 92
  • TWE minimum score of 5.5
  • IELTS minimum score of 7 in each category (reading, listening, writing and speaking)
  • MELAB minimum score of 85
  • CanTest minimum score of 4.5 in each category (reading, listening, writing and speaking)
  • Pearson Test of English(Academic) minimum score of 70

All applications are assessed on a competitive basis. Satisfaction of the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
