Peer Mentors
What is a Peer Mentor?
A peer mentor is an upper year undergraduate student who has volunteered to lead and
support students who are new to the Faculty of Computer Science at UNB. A
peer mentor is usually assigned approx. 10 new students to mentor throughout
the school year. Peer mentors are particularly important during
Orientation, when they help their students with course registration, lead
them through various fun activities, and help them become familiar with
the CS buildings, the campus, and Fredericton. However, Peer Mentors also
provide continued support throughout the school year.
An effective Peer Mentor is someone who empathizes with others and who is
interested in conveying a positive image of UNB and of the Faculty of
Computer Science. Peer mentors generally find the experience both fun
and rewarding.
How Do I Find Out Who My Peer Mentor Is?
All new students will be placed in a peer mentor group. You will meet
your peer mentor, and the other members of your group, during Orientation
in September.
The Undergraduate Secretary, Holly Burke, has a list of all first year
students and their assigned peer mentor (and their email addresses). If
you were unable to attend Orientation and you don't yet have the contact
information for your peer mentor, stop by and ask Holly or send her
an email.
How Do I Become a Peer Mentor?
If you have a B- average (2.7 GPA) or better, and are interested in
getting involved with new students, you should consider becoming a Peer
Mentor. Simply fill out the on-line Peer
Mentor Application Form. Please note the deadline at the top of the
application form.
We are looking for Peer Mentors for both the Fall and Winter terms. If
you are available for the Fall term, but will be away in the Winter, or
vice versa, we still want you to apply! We often have to replace Peer
Mentors who leave for a co-op work term in January. This is not a
problem.
In order to be a Peer Mentor for the Fall term, you must be available during Orientation Week.
