A New Grad Student On Campus - What To Do?

Step 1: Check in with the Faculty of Computer Science (CS Information Technology Centre, building #17 UNB map)

 The Graduate Secretary, Jodi O’Neill, can be found at the main office located in the CS Information Technology Centre, room C314.  She will set up an appointment and direct you to Dr. Eric Aubanel (Director of CS Graduate Studies) for course advising.  If you have a supervisor, please set up an appointment for advising.

 *International Students
Provide a copy of your study permit.  If you are guaranteed a GTA, obtain a letter to apply for Social Insurance Number.

 Step 2: Activate your IT Account

Go to a computer on the campus (Gillin Hall, room D108) and set up your PIN - log on with the username “activate".  On the UNB homepage click on “myUNB Portal” (bottom right), then “activate your IT Services” & follow the directions on the screens. 

(You will require your Student Number:___________ (also found on your acceptance letter)
                               & your UNB Login ID:___________).

 Step 3: Register in your Courses

On the UNB homepage, under “Quick Links” (top right), click “Online Registration”Read the information and go to the bottom of the page.  Click ONLINE REGISTRATION QUICK TOUR.  Follow the instructions under “Accessing WebAdvisor”, “Select Courses” and “Register for Previously Selected Courses”.  IN ADDITION TO YOUR COURSE REGISTRATION YOU MUST REGISTER EACH AND EVERY TERM IN THE SPECIFIC PROGRAM YOU ARE TAKING UNTIL YOU GRADUATE ie: MCS (CS6997), MCS Report (CS6996) or PhD THESIS (CS6998).  Once you have registered, BE SURE to click “Class Schedule” to verify that you have successfully registered in all your classes.  If you have a problem, please go to main office, room C314 for assistance.  The ITS Help Desk (located in the Harriet Irving Library, building #25 UNB map) can also assist you & can be reached at (506) 453-5199 or helpdesk@unb.ca.

 Step 4: Open a Bank Account

The Bank of Montreal is located on campus, (building #7 UNB map). Once you open a bank account, remember to obtain a blank void cheque or form from your bank that includes your account banking information.  Bring this information to the Financial Service office (see Tuition Fee Payment).

 Step 5: Tuition Fee Payment

Once you have registered and opened a bank account, you must pay your tuition fees.  Go to the Financial Services office in the I.U.C. Physics & Admin. Building (located in the basement across the street from the Graduate Studies office, building #34 UNB map) and see Linda Maher.   If you have been given financial assistance from your faculty or supervisor, bring the offer letter with you. 

 Step 6: Student ID Card

Once your fees are paid, you may get a Student ID card which will give you access to the Library and faculty labs.  You obtain this from Imaging Services, located in Marshall d’Avray Hall, 10 Mackay Dr., Room 106 (building #45 UNB map).  If your card says it is valid for the 2011-2012 academic year, you are all finished.  If a notation on the card says “Not Valid for 2011-2012”, please just see one of the staff members in the School of Graduate Studies office, Room 318 (building #61 UNB map).  Once we have verified that you have registered in your courses and your fees are paid, a validation sticker will be placed on your card.

 *International Students

Please check in with the International Students Advisors Office (Jones House, #35 UNB map).
