Program Description
When given the opportunity to teach, most of us start by teaching the way we have been taught in the past. Often this is not the best way.
During this program, you will be able to practice all the aspects of teaching a successful course including: planning and writing course outlines, sequencing content, choosing appropriate methods and materials for teaching, delivering a class, then evaluating the course, yourself and your students.
This is an opportunity for you to really look at how you teach, and why, and to consider new ways to engage students for more effective learning.
The focus in this course is teaching practice as opposed to theory. It is more like a workshop where you will be able to develop new course materials and try out new approaches in a supportive environment of your colleagues and an enthusiastic and knowledgeable facilitator. You will develop actual tools and techniques to bring directly into your teaching.
The primary goal of the DUT is to help you be a better teacher or said another way, "to help you be better at helping your students learn." You will end this course not only more skilled but also more self aware and confident as a teacher.
Course Objectives
At the end of the course you can expect to:
- Demonstrate new knowledge and skills related to course design as evidenced by the production of: a lesson plan for a new to you teaching-learning activity, a description of how you will use a classroom assessment techniques (CAT), and the creation of a new test of students' learning.
- Develop new or improved methods of teaching as evidenced particularly in your mini teaching session within this course.
- Provide constructive critiques of your colleagues in feedback of their mini-teaching sessions, as well as in reviewing their written assignments.
- Assess your own teaching, clarify your strengths, and outline a plan for continued improvement.
- Formulate a statement of your teaching philosophy that forms part of a teaching dossier.
