Choose Your Major

After first or second year, you will choose your major or specialty. By then you will have a good idea of your interests and talents, strengths and weaknesses.

Look at Your Interests and Skills

  • What courses did you enjoy and do well in?
  • Which ones came easily to you?
  • Which ones can you see yourself doing in 5 or 10 years?

Look at the Options and Opportunities

For each Faculty: Arts, Business Administration, Computer Science, Engineering, Forestry and Environmental Management, Kinesiology, Science, you will find

  • Majors, specialties and options
  • Job opportunities and where you can work
  • Skills you can acquire
  • Professional association and industry-related websites

Look to People Who Can Help

  • Contact your faculty advisor for an appointment. Your advisor can explain programs and requirements and discuss career possibilities.
  • Contact the faculty directly. The outreach co-ordinator can tell you about careers and co-op and summer placements related to your major.
  • Visit the Career Resource Center to review books and resources related to your major, or to talk to a career counselor.
  • Visit the Student Employment Service to learn about part-time, work-study (on-campus), internships and volunteer opportunities.
  • Consult with family, friends, and professorsabout your major. They may be able to connect you with professionals working in the field.

Relax

Keep in mind that choosing your major is only the first step, and need not restrict your career choices. Employers look for work-related experience and real world skills along with the knowledge associated with your major or specialty.
