About the Student Investment Fund program

If a career in finance and investment is your dream, the Student Investment Fund (SIF) program offered on the UNB Fredericton campus might be what you need to get the valuable knowledge and understanding that only hands-on experience can give you. In 1998, the New Brunswick Investment Management Corporation awarded the Faculty of Business Administration stewardship of over $1 million, which students in the SIF program would learn to invest. At UNB Fredericton, it can never be business as usual with innovative programs like this one. In 2008, four students in our student investment fund program won the North American championship at the second annual Global Investment Research Challenge in New York City

Worth six credit hours, this program combines finance theory with hands-on investment experience and an integrated study preparation for one of the most desirable of financial designations, the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). This is no other investment program in the country that provides this valuable learning experience for its students. After nearly eight years of informed investment decision making by student investors, the SIF surpassed the $2 million mark. In fact, students from the SIF program have outperformed the industry average pass rate on the CFA Level One exam.

Admission to the program

Fourth-year students of the BBA and second-year students of the MBA who hold prerequisites in accounting, corporate finance, investments and quantitative methods, and have a flair for research and investment decision-making are suitable candidates for this program. Students from non-business disciplines, who have the specified prerequisites, are encouraged to apply.

National and international competitions allow students to develop and demonstrate their trading, credit risk, and portfolio management skills and knowledge. We provide a learning environment that respects ethical behavior, innovation, creativity, teamwork, thoughtful analysis, self-directed and collaborative learning, and failure. "Hands-on" means students are engaged and actively learning. We will help you reach your highest potential through our not-so-usual method of teaching and learning. The SIF program will help you make an effective transition from university to the workplace.
