Honours and Majors

All candidates for an honour or a major in French must:

  • Submit a letter requesting admission to the program to Dr Christine Horne, chair of the French Department
  • Have received a grade of B or higher in their third year
  • Indicate to the Registrar that they are registered for a Honour in French.

All candidates for a major must:

  • Have received a grade of C or higher in their second year
  • Meet Dr Robert Viau, director of the honours and majors program
  • Indicate to the Registrar that they are registered for a major in French.

Please note that:

  • FR 3404 is the prerequisite to all linguistic courses
  • Francophone students may not take FR 3034 and 4034
  • Immersion graduates may not take FR 3034
  • It is suggested to take FR 3054 and 4054 in your 4th year

For a single honours (14 courses = 42 credits), you must take:

  • Option A:
    • Twelve upper-level FR courses (3000 and 4000 level)
    • FR 4902. Honours Report (6 ch)
  • Option B:
    • Fourteen upper-level FR courses (3000 and 4000 level)

For a joint honours (10 courses = 30 credits), you must take:

  • Ten upper-level FR courses (3000 and 4000 level)

For a single major (12 courses = 36 credits), you must take:

  • Twelve upper-level FR courses (3000 and 4000 level)

For a double major (10 courses = 30 credits), you must take:

  • Ten upper-level FR courses (3000 and 4000 level)
