How many courses should you take?

Full-time students normally* take 5 courses per term, for a total of 30 credit hours (30ch) per academic year (September to April).

• Arts 1000 (6ch)
• 6 credit hours (6ch) in each of three of the four discipline groups (Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, Languages)
• 6 credit hours (6ch) of electives (which can be chosen from any of the four discipline groups)

*For various reasons some students choose to take 24 rather than 30 ch in their first year. If you take 24 ch of courses, you are still considered a full-time student.

Part-time students may take a maximum of 9 credit hours per semester (September to December OR January to April)

Disciplines And Subjects

UNB Arts offers a wide range of subjects within 4 discipline groups.

The following discipline groups are open to first-year BA students:

To help you decide which subjects to study in your first year, a brief description of subjects is provided within each of the discipline groupings. Just click on the group heading (e.g. Humanities).

Along with the three subjects you choose, you also have to choose two electives, one for the Fall term and one for the Winter term. Your electives can be from any of the subjects within any of the disciplines, or Drama or Music.
