Choose Your Courses

Once you have selected your subjects, you choose your courses.

Where do you find the information you need to choose your courses?

When choosing your courses you must refer to the Academic Calendar and the Timetable. The Academic calendar provides you with information about University policies, regulations, program requirements, regulations, and descriptions of all the courses offered at UNB. The Timetable lists all the courses that will be offered at UNB this coming year.

Both the calendar and the timetable are available online:

What information is on the Timetable?

The information you need to select your courses is arranged in columns in the timetable. Each column provides specific information such as who the instructor is as well as the term, days of the week and times that the course is offered.

Example from the UNB Timetable

*Please note that the top row indicates year/term, campus, and undergraduate classes.

A description of the information provided by each column is listed below.

Column 1: ID

Column 1: ID

This is the computer code (or synonym) for the course. You will need this number when you register.

Column 2: Courses

Column 2: Course

This is the course number. The letters indicate the subject (i.e. History), the four digits the course number itself. All of the courses on your list should begin with "1" because one represents an introductory level or first year course. The fourth digit usually indicates the credit value of the course. Course numbers ending with a "0" indicate 6 credit hour courses. Course numbers ending with "1", "3", "4", "5", or "7" are normally 3 credit hour courses unless otherwise indicated.

Column 3: Section

Column 3: Section

The code in this column indicates the course section and location. An "A" at the end of the section code indicates a first term course, a "B" a second term course. If the section code ends in "X", this indicates that it is the first term of a full year course; a "Y" indicates the second term of a full year course

Column 4: Title

Column 4: Title

The title column gives the title of the course being offered.

Column 5: Instructor

Column 5: Instructor

The instructor for each course is identified in this column. If the entry in this column is "TBA", then the instructor has not yet been assigned to the course.

Column 6: Days

Column 6: Days

Look to this column to discover on which days the course is taught. (i.e. MWF = Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, TTH = Tuesday and Thursdays). The courses can range from meeting 4 times a week (this can happen in Calculus), 3 times a week plus a lab, twice a week plus a lab or tutorial (i.e. Arts 1000), twice a week and once a week (such as evening classes).

Column 7: Times

Column 7: Times

The times for each section is listed in this column. The earliest classes can begin at 8:30 am, the latest classes begin at 7:00pm. Classes that meet three times a week are normally 50 minutes in duration (example: HIST 1001). Classes that meet twice a week are approximately 80 minutes in duration (example: HIST 1315) and classes that meet once a week are normally three hours plus a break.

Column 8: Building/Rooms

Column 8: Building and Room

Come September, when the final edition of the timetable is available, the location of your chosen classes will be listed in this column. It will indicate within which building and room your class is held.

Column 9: Capacity/Enrollment

Column 9: Capacity and Enrollment

The first number tells you the total number of students that can take this course, and the second tells you how many are currently signed up for it. A W beside the class means that there are people on the waitlist for the class.
