Congratulations to The Fiddlehead on winning a National Magazine Award for the publication of Stephen Heighton's story, "Shared Room on Union."  The Fiddlehead also received two honourable mentions for fiction and two for poetry.

Congratulations to Karen Solie (Writer-in-Residence 2006-2007) on the success of her new collection of poetry, Pigeon, which has received the following awards:  The Griffin Prize for poetry (now Canada's most prestigious award for poetry), The Pat Lowther Prize for the Best Poetry Book in Canada Written by a Woman, and The Ontario Trillium Award for Poetry.

Congratulations to Diana Austin, who is the recipient of the Association of Atlantic Universities' 2010 Distinguished Teaching Award.  This is the first time this award has been bestowed upon a UNB(F) faculty member.

2011

Congratulations to:

  • Tammy Armstrong (PhD, current), who has been granted a Fulbright Award to conduct research in English Literature at George State University. Tammy will spend nine months at George State, starting in September, conducting research for a project entitled: "An Ecocritical Menagerie: Atlantic Canadian Poetics."

2010

Congratulations to:

  • Charmaine Cadeau (Creative Writing MA, 2003) on her tenure-track position at High Point University in North Carolina, where she will be teaching a blend of literature and creative writing courses.
  • Matte Robinson (PhD) on receiving the Excellence in Part-Time Teaching Award at St. Thomas University's Spring Convocation.
  • James Langer (Creative Writing MA, 2006, current PhD) on winning the Gerald Lampert Prize for Best First Poetry Book in Canada for his collection Gun Dogs.
  • Steve McOrmond (Creative Writing 1997) on the publication of his third book of poetry, The Good News About Armageddon.
  • Antony Christie (Creative Writing MA, 2002) on the publication of his second book of poetry, Of Love and Drowning.

Congratulations to:

  • Tammy Armstrong (PhD English, current), on the publication of her second novel, Pye-Dogs. This is Tammy's fifth book. She is also a former nominee for the Governor-General's Award for Poetry.
  • James Arthur (Creative Writing MA 2001) on the publication of his poem, "The Death of the Painter," in The New Yorker in March 2007. James now holds a prestigious Stegner Fellowship at Stanford University.
    Congratulations also on his admission to the Bread Loaf Writers' Workshop as a Tuition Scholar. Bread Loaf is one of the most renowned summer programs in the US.
  • Madeline Bassnett (PhD), who has been awarded a SSHRC Post Doctoral (the first one awarded to a graduate of the department in over 20 years).
  • Katie Brown (Creative Writing, current), who was admitted to the PhD in Creative Writing at the University of Calgary (where only two to three students are accepted each year).
  • Jill Connell (Creative Writing MA, 2006) on being one of two students accepted to the playwriting program at the National Theatre School.
  • Craig Davidson (Creative Writing MA, 2004) on the announcement in the Globe & Mail that the stories from his UNB thesis Rust and Bone will be used for a film by renowned French director Jacques Audiard. Audiard won the Grand Prix at Cannes for his most recent film, "A Prophet."
  • Jesse Ferguson (English PhD, current) on the publication of his collection of poetry, Harmonics.
    As well, Jesse's poem, "MAMA," was published in Harper's magazine (January 2009).
  • Matthew Heiti (Creative Writing MA, current) on winning the Short Grain Fiction Prize for "Snakeskin Boots."
  • Jennifer Houle (Creative Writing MA, 2009), the winner of the Great Blue Heron Poetry Contest sponsored by The Antigonish Review.
  • Danny Jacobs (Creative Writing MA, 2008) on winning the Short Grain Poetry Prize for "How to Shoot Skeet with My Grandfather's Lost Double Barrell."
  • James Langer (Creative Writing MA, 2006; PhD current) on the publication of his poetry collection, Gun Dogs.
  • Ian LeTourneau (English MA, 2003) on the publication of his new book of poetry, Terminal Moraine.
  • Holly Luhning (Creative Writing MA, 2002) on the acceptance of her novel (tentatively titled Quiver) for publication with Harper Collins. Holly's first book, Sway, a book of poetry, was based on her UNB MA thesis. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at McGill University.
  • Vanessa Moeller (Creative Writing MA, 2007) on the publication of her collection of poetry, Our Extraordinary Monsters.
  • Diane Reid (Creative Writing MA, 2009) who received a New Brunswick Arts Board (ARTSNB) Emerging Artist grant for Tea Party.
  • Shane Rhodes (Creative Writing MA, 1998) on receiving the P.K. Page Founder's Award for Poetry, which recognizes the best poem published in 2009, for "For Donnie Peters (1964-1999)."
  • Matt Robinson (Creative Writing MA, 2000) for receiving the Malahat Long Poem Prize for "against the hard angle."
  • Barbara Romanik (MA 2004) on the publication of her collection of stories, 10 Things to Ask Yourself in Warsaw.
  • Emily Ruskovich (Creative Writing MA, current) on her admission to the MFA at University of Iowa, one of the most prestigious creative writing programs in the world.
  • Rod Schumacher (Creative Writing MA, 1996) on the publication of his second book, Baptism by Mud.
  • Sue Sinclair (MA Creative Writing, 1997) on the publication of her fourth collection of poetry, Breaker.
  • Kristel Thornell (Creative Writing MA, 2002), co-winner of 2009 The Australian/Vogel Prize for the novel Night Street. $20,000 Australian Dollars and publication by Allen & Unwin.
  • Matt Tierney (Creative Writing MA, 1997) on the publication of his second book of poetry, The Hayflick Limit.
  • Stephanie Yorke (Creative Writing MA, 2009) was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship. This is a great accomplishment, as only 10 of these scholarships are awarded nationally each year to deserving scholars. Beginning in the fall of 2009, Stephanie will be attending Oxford University where her PhD work will focus on depictions of disabled people in contemporary Indian literature.
