Summer theatre

UNB Drama program graduates Michael Holmes-Lauder, Stefan Folkins and Thomas Fanjoy in the Bard in the Barracks production of Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost in Odell Park, 2012. Theatre UNB is active year-round as a partner in two major annual summer theatre initiatives.

Bard in the Barracks Theatre Company, directed by UNB director of drama Len Falkenstein, stages outdoor productions of the works of William Shakespeare in downtown Fredericton locations, including Odell Park and Barracks Square. Current and former UNB drama students regularly participate in the productions, which draw large crowds and have become one of the highlights of Fredericton’s summer arts and culture scene.

The NotaBle Acts Summer Theatre Festival, staged in late July at UNB and other locations in Fredericton, features up to fifteen new plays by New Brunswick playwrights annually. Some UNB Drama students are involved each year as actors, directors and writers of plays produced in the festival, with others hired for paid summer employment as crew members.
