Theatre UNB presents:
Departures and Arrivals - a play by Carol Shields.
Running from Wednesday, Nov. 3rd until Saturday, Nov. 6th.
Theatre UNB is set to kick off its 2010-11 season with Departures and Arrivals, a comedy by Carol Shields, award-winning Canadian novelist (The Stone Diaries, Larry's Party) and playwright.
Departures and Arrivals is set in a major international airport and depicts the stories of a number of people who pass through the terminal in the course of a day. Scenes vary widely in tone, from serious realistic encounters, such as one involving a father bidding farewell to a daughter who is flying across the country to start a new life; to the lurid melodrama of a pilot and flight attendant who play out their fraught love affair in a series of soap-opera-style scenes; to absurdly surreal scenes, such as one involving a reality TV-style director coaxing a family through the essentials of how to stage the perfect airport reunion.
Suffice to say there is never a dull moment, with the 29 actors performing rapid-fire scenes and transforming into over 60 characters. There's even a musical number that breaks out spontaneously in the airport, not to mention a wedding, and, of course, the requisite bomb scare.
Departures and Arrivals is directed by Len Falkenstein and features the students of UNB's introductory and advanced drama production classes.
