Title: Taking the Same Route
Walking is not just a physical activity; it is also an imaginative act. As Rebecca Solnit describes in Wanderlust, “Walking allows us to be in our bodies and in the world. . . . It leaves us free to think without being wholly lost in our thoughts” (5). Whether you take the path you planned, or take a chance on a different path, a walk occurs inside the mind as it simultaneously occurs corporally. Using the figure of the flâneuse, the female walker of the city, Taking the Same Route looks at different ways of walking in the city of Fredericton: bodily, imaginatively, alone or in company, through prisms of gender, economics, and history.
