Tammy ArmstrongUniversity of New Brunswick Student Receives Prestigious Fulbright Award to Conduct Research in the United States

Ottawa, ON – Ms. Tammy Armstrong, a student at the University of New Brunswick, has been granted a Fulbright Award to conduct research in English Literature at Georgia State University. Ms. Armstrong will spend nine months at Georgia State, starting in September, conducting research for a project entitled: “An Ecocritical Menagerie: Atlantic Canadian Poetics.”

As a Fulbright Student at Georgia State University, Ms. Armstrong will explore ways in which natural environments influence the poetic sensibilities of contemporary poets from Atlantic Canada. Her project will be focused particularly on Maritime poets’ relationships to animals within their texts, and she will examine how ecocriticism can be applied differently in their unique geographic settings.

“It is with a great deal of pleasure that I welcome Ms. Tammy Armstrong to the distinguished group of Canada-U.S. Fulbright scholars,” says Dr. Michael Hawes, Executive Director of Fulbright Canada. “Ms. Armstrong’s project will make a meaningful and significant contribution to the study of Atlantic Canadian poetry and ecocritical theory.”

Ms. Armstrong holds a Masters in Fine Arts and a Bachelors of Fine Arts from the University of British Columbia. Ms. Armstrong is currently working towards her PhD in English Literature. She is the author of several novels and books of poetry, and her work has also appeared in numerous anthologies, journal articles, and peer-reviewed conference papers. Ms. Armstrong is also the winner of numerous writing awards and honours, including being short-listed several times for the CBC’s Literary Awards for poetry.
