About the Department of Culture and Media Studies

In our department, you will:

  • blend theory and practice as a scholar and a creator of music, film, games, design and more
  • learn about culture(s) and cultural diversity
  • combine traditional coursework with creative projects using a wide range of digital technologies
  • improve your communication and intercultural skills in discussion-oriented classes
  • expand your competence in foreign languages

Forces like globalization, technology, democratization and post-colonial forces continue to shape the world we live in.

Our classes prepare students to respond to challenges and opportunities by developing analytical, creative and academic skills in disciplines such as media studies, cultural studies, languages and literatures.

The Department of Culture and Media Studies houses specialists in media studies, literatures, film, music, and languages. This multidisciplinary group is dedicated to fostering broad understandings of culture while also offering opportunities for students to engage critically and creatively with an array of media arts, global cultures and musical traditions.

Our alumni go on to top graduate schools and have pursued careers in education, filmmaking, translation, public relations, design, the music industry and many other exciting fields.

Our main office is located in Carleton Hall (#333), but we also have faculty members in Memorial Hall (Music) and Marshall d’Avray Hall (Media Arts & Cultures).
