Dr Ryan Gibbon is a geoarchaeologist with a focus on studying the Stone Age in Africa. The research that he conducts is interdisciplinary, and in general terms it involves studying both landscape and human evolution. Specific aspects he investigates include: modern and palaeo-fluvial geomorphology; geo-chronology; palaeo-climate/environmental reconstruction; human evolution and the evolution of stone tool technology. Dr Gibbon applies geomorphological principles to understand the earth surface processes that led to the preservation of Stone Age artefacts within various sedimentary deposits. In addition, he conducts cosmogenic nuclide burial dating to provide a geochronological sequence for the deposits and associated artefacts.
