Christianne Paponnet-Cantat

Christiane Paponnet-Cantat joined the Department of Anthropology at the University of New Brunswick in 1988. She holds degrees from the University of British Columbia (BA), and Simon Fraser University (MA and PhD).

Professor Paponnet-Cantat’s area of specialization is Latin American studies. She has research and practical experiences in Peru, Cuba, and Mexico. Since 1994, her research has focused on Cuban society. She is a member of Cuba’s CESOC (Centro de Estudios Socio-Culturales), and Honorary Professor at the University of Cienfuegos.

Her past research focused on peasant studies and land reform processes in Latin America. Her current research includes tourism, Cuban women as entrepreneurs, Cuban naïve painters, and issues of national identities and collective memory formation.
