Christiane Paponnet-Cantat (Professor)

Christianne Paponnet-CantatChristiane Paponnet-Cantat is Professor of Social Anthropology. She joined the Department of Anthropology at the University of New Brunswick in 1988, and holds degrees from the University of British Columbia (BA), and Simon Fraser University (MA and PhD).

Professor Paponnet-Cantat’s area of specialization is Latin American studies. She has research and practical experiences in Peru, Cuba, and Mexico. Other projects have taken her to Honduras, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Chad and Korea. Over the years, her research has been funded by CIDA (1982-4), SSHRC (1985-8),and IDRC (1996-8, 2000-3, and 2005-6). Her current research includes Cuban tourism, and the social impact of climate change on Cuba’s agricultural sector. In 1996, she became a member of Cuba’s CESOC (Centro de Estudios Socio-Culturales), and in 1999 received an Honorary Professorship at the University of Cienfuegos.

At UNB Professor Paponnet-Cantat has served for five years as Director of FOCAL-Atlantic (the Atlantic Branch of the Foundation for Latin America and the Caribbean) and for three years as Chair of the Department of Anthropology. She has been offering an intersession study program in Merida, Mexico since 1993 and, in May and June 1996, was one of three Canadian professors conducting the WUSC study seminar in Peru.

At the national level, Professor Paponnet-Cantat has served on a number of selection committees for funding agencies, namely the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA Award Program; CIDA Partnership Program, TIER 2), the International Development Research Center (LACREG program), the Humanities and Social Sciences Federation of Canada (Aid to Scholarly Publications Program), and the Department of Human Resources (North American Mobility in Higher Education program).
