Dr. Philip Smith is Professor of Psychology at the University of Prince Edward Island, where he has previously served as Department Chair and Dean of Arts. His teaching includes students inintroductory psychology, research methods, human services, and special topics seminars in family violence and in parenting.
Philip’s professional engagement with family violence prevention goes back to clinical practice in the 1980s, when repeatedly faced with women clients experiencing limited options in abusive relationships.
He served on the Board of the PEI Transition House Association (1987-1990) and since then has volunteered from time to time with other efforts to address issues of family violence. Most recently he has served as Chair of the Premier’s Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention (2009-2014), as a member of the Child Protection Act Review Advisory Committee (2015-2016), and as Co-Chair of the PEI Triple P Positive Parenting Implementation Committee (2014 – present).
In 2014 Philip was a recipient of the Muriel McQueen Ferguson Foundation Award
