Understanding the diverse causes and impacts of conflict
The Gregg Centre for the Study of War and Society
One of UNB's distinguished research centres, The Milton F. Gregg Centre for the Study of War and Society is devoted to excellence in the study of war as a complex social phenomenon. With the goal of increasing understanding of the cause, course, and consequence of armed conflict, the Gregg Centre is internationally recognized for its graduate program, undergraduate and graduate teaching, public outreach, popular and scholarly publications, and its expertise in all aspects of modern conflict.
Providing Core Programs to Enhance the Learning Experience
Besides offering undergraduate and graduate teaching second to none, the Gregg Centre offers unique study experiences that assist in setting war and modern military history into the broader context of the international history of armed conflict. It publishes a scholarly journal, the Journal for Conflict Studies, and the books authored by its staff, its visiting speakers program and local conferences are all accessible to the general public. Although the Centre receives an operating grant from the Security and Defence Forum of DND it conducts no directed research for the Armed Forces. Rather it provides an independent and critical civilian perspective on issues of defence and security.
Educating on Canada's Military Heritage
The Gregg Centre supports and participates in a number of scholarly and popular endeavours to improve awareness about Canada's military heritage. In addition to its scholarly publications (books, journal articles and the like) the Centre's New Brunswick Military Heritage Project (NBMHP) publishes a book series, while the Canadian Army Studies Project is devoted to an analysis of the modern Canadian army. The Centre offers students and the general public tours of important Canadian military heritage sites within Canada, Italy, France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. Such learning experiences, in which total war is a key theme, are described as defining points in the lives of all participants, who become ambassadors of remembrance.
In addition, the Gregg Centre hosts a local public lecture series, a series of outreach conferences in the Atlantic provinces, a fall annual conference in conjunction with the Combat Training School (CTC) on CFB Gagetown, among other things.
