Dean attended New Brunswick Community College and graduated with his Machinist certificate in 1986. Directly after graduating, he joined UNB in the Nuclear Engineering department and the next year he moved to the Chemical Engineering department. At both faculties, he designed and fabricated equipment for research projects. In 1988, he joined Forestry and Environmental Management in the Wood Science and Technology Centre (WSTC) as the Chief Technologist. While at WSTC, Dean continued his education with another technical certificate in Instrumentation from Intertechnologies in Toronto, Ontario.

The WSTC is developing new technologies and knowledge that can be transferred to the forest and forest products industry. WSTC specializes in wood product testing. Dean is responsible for logging and calibration of sensor load cells and the Linear Motion Displacement Device which are used to research engineered wood products.

In his spare time, Dean is an outdoor enthusiast, and enjoys hunting, fly fishing, and canoeing.
