The Calm before the Storm: Spruce Budworm as a case study for understanding the dynamics of insect epidemics

Abstract:

An epidemic of the spruce budworm is currently raging in eastern Quebec and is expected to soon spread through Atlantic Canada. Outbreaks of spruce budworm can have a major impact on ecosystem function, but are perhaps best known for their largely negative impact on wood supply for forest industries. From an ecologist’s perspective, I discuss the dynamical nature of spruce budworm outbreak cycles and spread and draw attention to the major theoretical framework currently shaping our understanding of spruce budworm outbreaks.
