Already have most (or all) content written?

Do you want to submit to DSpace and/or try out our ETD templates?

You can still use the ETD templates even if you have all--or part of--your content written. Although it depends how much you have done and what type of software you currently are using, it usually is a smooth process.

Pasting Content

The following is a basic explanation of how to transfer your content to the ETD template. Please make sure you visit the Word 2007 resources section for detailed instructions on how to use the template.

What to do with each template section

Please note that if you used special referencing/bibliography programs or other third-party software tools to write your thesis, there is a possibility that converting to the template may require extra work.

Title Page

Manually fill out the given fields in the template.

Dedication, Abstract, List of terms

You can simply paste your content in these sections.

Table of Contents, List of Tables, List of Figures

Theses sections will be automatically generated when you are completely finished with the body content. If your list of tables and figures do not display properly, please read the Adding tables, figures, and other objects section.

Note: You may have to re-insert your tables/figures or their captions when pasting chapters into the template.

Body of the thesis (Chapter content)

Each chapter should be pasted in separately to make the process smoother. You will have to format each chapter and sub-chapter/section to the proper format so that the table of contents will generate properly. Please see the Inserting new chapters section in the Word 2007 guide on how to do this.

Bibliography

You can simply paste your content here.

Things to look for

You may need to change certain things after you paste content into the template depending on how your source document was formatted. Here are some of the more common issues that you may want to look out for:

  • Page numbering may be off
  • Margins may need to be adjusted
  • Indentation of paragraphs and spacing of titles
