Apply for the Currie Scholarship

The Currie Undergraduate Scholarships were established by Richard James Currie, O.C., C.B.H.F., M.B.A, L.L.D., P.Eng. installed as Chancellor of the University of NewBusiness leader and UNB Chancellor, Dr. Richard J. Currie speaking about the power of philanthropy at a luncheon celebrating the legacy of Lord Beaverbrook. Brunswick in May 2003. The scholarships are awarded annually to students beginning an undergraduate degree program at UNB upon graduation from a high school in any of the four Atlantic Provinces.

The Currie Undergraduate scholarships are intended to support the education of future leaders. The applicants are therefore asked to submit an essay (not less than 250 words) giving the selection committee an indication of their leadership capabilities, including (but not limited to) school and extra-curricular activities. Required in the essay is evidence of overcoming barriers or difficult situations. 

A total of four Currie Undergraduate Scholarships will be awarded as follows: 

Value: A total of $50,000 each, awarded as follows – Year 1: $15,000 Year 3: $12,000 Year 2: $13,000 Year 4: $10,000 (with possibility of funding for a fifth year, for engineering students) 

Please note: Recipients are required to live in residence for the first year of their degree program. 

Note: A 3.7 Scholarship Grade Point Average is required each year to renew this scholarship. 

Deadline: Applications must be received by March 1. If the application deadline falls on a Saturday or Sunday, please ensure your application is received by UNB on or before the Friday preceding March 1. 

The Currie Scholarship selection committee will review and select the recipients. The Committee is comprised of Mrs. C. Elizabeth Meier, B.A. ‘71, M.Sc. ‘75, B.Sc.N. ‘86; Rev. James W. Golding L.Th. ‘63; Dr. Earle W. Wood, B.Sc. ‘59, BEd ‘66, M.A. ‘69, LL.D. ‘98. 

Ten finalists will be interviewed in Fredericton on Friday, March 15 and Saturday, March 16, 2013. Travel and accommodations will be covered. Attendance is required.
