At
the end of every year Maclean's
Magazine conducts a survey asking Canadians what
they think about everything from politics to television
to sex. In the survey people are asked a number of
questions about themselves and what they think about
various issues and ideas. The section on values in
the 2000 survey was introduced as follows:
"There has been some discussion lately about
the kind of place Canada should become in the next
few years. For each of the following statements can
you please tell me whether you agree or disagree that
these are the kinds of things that Canada should do
in the next few years. That is do you strongly agree,
somewhat agree, neither agree nor disagree, somewhat
disagree, or strongly disagree."

One of the statements people were asked to respond to
was:
"Should Canada insist that all immigrants adopt
Canadian values?"
Try an experiment in your class. Have everyone respond
to this statement using the scale described above
(strongly agree, somewhat agree, neither agree nor disagree,
somewhat disagree, or strongly disagree).
Develop a chart or graph to indicate the range of responses
in your class.
How does your class response compare to that reported
in MacLean's? Are the students in your class more or
less likely to agree that immigrants should be required
to adopt Canadian values? Is there relative consensus
(agreement) in your class or a wide diversity of views
on this matter? Let's move on to consider questions
like these in more detail |
