Biography

Teresa Tang is a GIS programmer and data analyst at the Canadian Research Institute for Social Policy. She has a Master of Science in Engineering with the Department of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering at the University of New Brunswick (UNB). Before coming to Canada, she earned a bachelor degree in Geography and a master degree in Urban Planning from the University of Hong Kong. To pursue her interest in data visualization, she is taking a Visualization course at Harvard University Extension School.

Teresa joined CRISP as a part-time research assistant in Feb 2004. She specializes in GIS and mapping applications; database design, management and maintenance; data visualization; and web application development. In 2004, she and Richard Chan developed an online evaluation system for the Early Years Evaluation - Teacher Assessment (EYE-TA), an instrument initially created by Dr. Doug Willms and Dr. Joan Beswick to assist educators in assessing the skills of children age 4 to 6 years. She continues to enhance the data entry site with improved functionality and data visualization features.

She has been involved in a number of projects at CRISP including but not limited to the New Brunswick Schools Early Literacy Project coordinated by Dr. Elizabeth Sloat where she was the administrator of the database and the EYE-TA online system. She was the coordinator for CRISP's contribution to the RURAL Centre's research network headed by Judy Guernsey at Dalhousie University, and coordinator of the Atlantic Networks for Prevention Research (ANPR) program headed by Renee Lyons. She has been involved in numerous projects that produce maps to assist evidence-based policy decision making.

Selected Conference Presentations

Invited Speaker, Title: GeoDF: An Innovative Approach to Online Participatory Planning
One of the four invited speakers at 1er Forum VRM sur les méthodologies innovantes en études urbaines et régionales, 77e Congrès de l'Acfas, University of Ottawa, Ottawa, ON, 13 May 2009. The following was discussed in the presentation: the nature of this approach, how GeoDF* helps to bridge the communication gap in online participatory planning, and the challenges. The forum was attended by researchers focus on the theoretical and methodological innovation in urban and regional studies.
*GeoDF is a prototype developed as part of my Master’s thesis which proved that Geographical Information Systems can significantly enhance communication whilst participants are discussing spatially-related issues online.
