This is the first of two silver
maples on this trail. We have put two trees on the trail to show the variation
in the leaves, while this maple has sharp, deep cut lobes, the second
silver maple has more shallow lobes. Silver maple is named for the silvery
color on the back of the leaves but is also called soft maple. This species
is very useful to wildlife as the trunk, which is often hollow, can be
home to raccoons, squirrels and many other mammals or birds. |
