The following pre-conference events will be offered at MEC17. 

Assessment of Capacity for Myoelectric Control Course (ACMC)

Sunday, August 13th 8:30-4:30 and Monday, August 14th 8:30-12:00.

This course will be appropriate for anyone who wishes to become certified to administer the Assessment of Capacity for Myoelectric Control (ACMC) or anyone wanting to learn more about this specific measure of hand function.

The ACMC was developed by Liselotte Hermansson, an occupational therapist and is most useful in a clinical or research environment, administered by occupational therapists who have experience with myoelectric control. Other professionals (prosthetists, engineers, etc) who have taken the ACMC course have found it to be a great tool for understanding the complexities and progression involved in learning to control a myoelectric hand, although most non-therapists do not intend to use it clinically. 

The “Assessment of Capacity for Myoelectric Control” (ACMC) is an observational assessment developed to assess the ability of a prosthesis user to control a myoelectric prosthetic hand. Each item in the ACMC is an observable prosthetic hand movement, such as “timing during grasping”, or an observable prosthetic hand movement in relation to other body parts, such as “uses the prosthesis above shoulder height”.

The ACMC assesses how skillful a prosthesis hand user performs different prosthetic hand movements when performing a bimanual activity and therefore an ACMC assessment is often carried out during the client’s performance of an everyday activity. The activity is selected according to the client’s developmental stage and interest. Hence, the assessment is suitable for users of different ages, either prosthetic side and different prosthetic levels. Suggestions for structured activities have been developed for use during ACMC assessments.

Novel outcome measures for advanced bidirectional upper limb prosthesis control and feedback

Location: Head Hall, 15 Dineen Drive, University of New Brunswick (starts at Dineen Auditorium at 1 pm)

This hands-on workshop will demonstrate six new outcome measures that are being developed as part of the DARPA HAPTIX project. These outcome measures have been designed to highlight improvements that may result from bidirectional neural interfaces, but are also appropriate for conventional devices. These measures range from simple tests that may be conducted in under an hour with minimal equipment, to more sophisticated outcome measures that use eye-tracking and motion-capture. This workshop will provide an opportunity to try out the outcome measures and to give feedback on their implementation.
