Report: Graduate Research Conference

This past Friday, UNB held the annual Graduate Research Conference in Fredericton. For those unaware, this is an annual internal conference held by the UNB Graduate Students Association giving graduate students a chance to present their research in an inter-campus setting.

I am very pleased to say that UNBSJ had fantastic representation from our grad students at this year's conference! In terms of participation, we had 11 students from three departments contribute in some form to the GRC this year, whether it be with peer-reviewing abstracts, volunteering at the conference, or presenting oral or poster presentations. The Saint John participants were:

  • Faith Penney (Biology; oral presentation)
  • Lindsay May (Biology; oral presentation)
  • Jeff Clements (Biology; oral presentation)
  • Brady Quinn (Biology; oral presentation)
  • Amanda Babin (Biology; oral presentation)
  • Andrew Cowie (Biology; oral presentation)
  • Lillian Fanjoy (Psychology; poster presentation)
  • Eima Hajizadeh (Psychology; poster presentation)
  • Stefanie Ciszewski (Psychology; poster presentation)
  • Raja Wetuscat (Biology; peer-reviewer)
  • Ghadah Althawwad (Business; volunteer)

Two car-loads of us went up on Friday morning and returned Friday night. The day was full of great talks from a wide arrange of disciplines from both campuses. Following the conference, many attendees congregated at the Grad House to socialize and network. In addition, awards were presented at the grad house for first and second place oral presentations and top poster presentation!

Two of our grad students wound up with prizes for both presentation styles - Stefanie Ciszewski from psychology won the top poster presentation for her poster entitled "Alcohol Abuse and Dependence: Personality Correlates", while Amanda Babin from biology won second place oral presentation in the Science & Engineering section for her talk entitled "Industrial Underwater Noise Levels in the Bay of Fundy and their Effects on Harbour Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) Echolocation Activity".

All in all, our campus had a very strong showing at this year's GRC. Please join us in congratulating all presenters and award winners!

Graduate Research Conference

Graduate students,

As you may recall, the Graduate Research Conference will be held on April 26th in Fredericton. I'm thrilled to announce that at least nine students from the Saint John campus will be presenting at this year's GRC (one of, if not, the highest participation that UNBSJ has had at this conference)! The Saint John students (that Fredericton has informed me of) who will be presenting are:

Eima Hajizadeh (Psychology)

Lillian Fanjoy (Psychology)

Stefanie Ciszewski (Psychology)

Lindsay May (Biology)

Amanda Babin (Biology)

Andrew Cowie (Biology)

Faith M Penny (Biology)

Kristin Dinning (Biology)

Brady K. Quinn (Biology)

As such, we will need to make travel arrangements for the conference. The GSA will be funding travel expenses to and from Fredericton for the conference.

If you would like to attend the conference in Fredericton, you must RSVP to this e-mail by FRIDAY, MARCH 29th at the LATEST. Students who wish to attend the conference simply to see some talks are also welcomed to come (not just those presenting). Those who do not respond by Friday, March 29th and decide afterward that they would like to go will not be eligable for travel accommodations from the GSA.

Additionally, we will have a meeting of those who do RSVP and plan to attend to work out specific travel arrangements for the conference shortly after the RSVP deadline - so please stay tuned!

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me (Jeff; j.clements@unb.ca). I'm happy to see a strong Saint John representation at this year's Graduate Research Conference.

GSA Movie night

Movie

The PhD Movie was a smash-hit for grad students!

The GSA movie night, which was held on February 28th in the Ganong Hall Lecture Theater, was a great success! Approximately 15 students came out to enjoy some popcorn, candy, pop, and the PhD Movie! Not surprisingly, the movie was very well received by the graduate students in attendance, as laughter consistently filled the theater!

Please stay tuned for the next GSA event, which will be coming up soon!

GSA Christmas party

The GSA Christmas party, held on 15 December 2012 at Big Tide Brewery, was a great success! Roughly 40 graduate students from biology, physics, psychology, interdisciplinary studies, business, and computer science came out for a fun night filled with conversation, laughs, and of course, food and beer!  Many attendees left a little early for the opening show of The Hobbit, which resulted in some costumes and props appearing at the party (see photo). The GSA would like to thank all who came out for a great night and look forward to more events this semester!

Congratulations graduate students Faith Penney and Joe Mudge

The UNBSJ GSA would like to congratulate grad students Faith Penney and Joe Mudge, along with professor Dr. Jeff Houlahan, on the publication of their paper entitled 'Optimizing α for better statistical decisions: A case study involving the pace-of-life syndrome hypothesis'.

The paper was recently published in the journal BioEssays and discusses how choosing an arbitrary significance level of 0.05 in studies assessing the pace-of-life syndrome hypothesis can lead to inadequate results, with some modified optimal-α results being associated with biological relevance.

If interested, you can find the paper here.

Congratulations Faith, Joe, and Jeff!

Congratulations graduate student Jeff Clements

The UNBSJ GSA would like to congratulate grad student Jeff Clements on the recent publication of his research note entitled 'First record of the Fiery Skipper, Hylephila phyleus Drury (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae) from New Brunswick, Canada'. The paper was published in The Journal of the Acadian Entomological Society and outlines a new species record of the Fiery Skipper butterfly, which Jeff discovered and collected at Rockwood Park in Saint John this past August.

If interested, you can find the paper here.

Congratulations Jeff!

Congratulations graduate students Joe Mudge and Tim Barrett

The UNBSJ GSA would like to extend a big congratulations to graduate students Joe Mudge and Tim Barrett on the recent publication of their article entitled "Negative Consequences of Using α = 0.05 for Environmental Monitoring Decisions: A Case Study from a Decade of Canada’s Environmental Effects Monitoring Program".

The paper was published in Environmental Science and Technology alongside UNBSJ's own co-authors Kelly Munkittrick and Jeff Houlahan. It outlines how choosing an arbitrary significance level of 0.05 in studies conducted under the Environmental Effects Monitoring (EEM) program leads to implied costs of type I and type II that are inconsistent with EEM endpoints and philosophy and suggests that EEM studies should use study-specific optimal alpha levels rather than the usual  α=0.05.

If interested, you can find the paper here.

Congratulations Joe and Tim!

If you are a grad student at UNBSJ and would like to have your publications announced on our website, please contact us!
