Corrosion of reinforcing bars in cracked
concrete specimens
Half-cast corrosion specimen
To date more than 400 concrete prisms were cast. Half of them have a
preformed crack of 0.3 - 0.4 mm and all of them contain U-shaped reinforcing
bar. Variables include:
-
w/c=0.6
-
w/c=0.25
-
plain bars uncoated
-
epoxy-coated rebars (5 different types)
-
galvanized steel bars
-
three types of corrosion inhibitors
Recently we started a new testing program that involves testing of concrete
slab specimens with preformed cracks of 0.1, 0.2 0.3 and 0.4 mm widths
and W/C 0.6, 0.5, 0.4, 0.3, and 0.25 with silica fume cement replacement.
Each specimen contains two straight uncoated bars and SS counter electrode.
Specimens are placed at Treat Island and in the accelerated testing chamber
at UNB.
Testing is carried out by Irina Kondratova, PhD
graduate student, at the natural marine exposure station (Treat's Island,
Maine) and in the Marine Environment Simulation Setup (MESS) at the University
of New Brunswick.
