Introduction

Our seemingly insatiable demand for energy can be satisfied most economically by burning coal. Coal combustion generates a residual that has a multitude of uses, and to implement ways to use this resource effectively - the Association of Canadian Industries Recycling Coal Ash (CIRCA) was formed. Its mission is to bring together Canadian producers and marketers of coal combustion products (CCP) to increase technically sound, environmentally responsible and commercially competitive uses of CCPs as mineral resources. As part of that mission, CIRCA engaged Dr.Bremner and Dr.Thomas of the University of New Brunswick to prepare this web based educational unit for Civil Engineering students' introduction to materials. Students should first continue on in this web based format and then download the PowerPoint Presentation or Text only for detailed study. After this, students should complete the test module
and the assigned essay, available through the designated faculty member teaching Engineering Materials.
