Research Associate in Cybersecurity

The Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity (CIC), University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, N.B., Canada invites applications for a Research Associate in the field of Cybersecurity. The Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity’s research program on the Science of Cybersecurity focuses on enabling the development of information and network security solutions for the evolving data-intensive cyber domain by focusing on the value and meaning of security data (i.e., intelligence). The main focus of the program is on development and implementation of novel approaches for addressing the timely security challenges in cyberspace.

The successful candidate will bring architectural and engineering experience to design, develop, and implement cybersecurity solutions; have working knowledge of statistical and machine learning techniques; investigate the feasibility of applying scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions and products; and, plan and execute applied research. The candidate must contribute to scientific literature and conferences, possess exceptional communication skills, and be able to interact with both business and technology stakeholders at various levels while applying subject matter expertise for security technologies and solutions.

Required skills and experience:

  • A PhD degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or in a relevant discipline plus two years related experience.
  • Some postdoctoral research experience is an asset
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work on a team project.

Successful applicants

  • Expected to co-supervise graduate students.
  • Teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in cybersecurity.
  • Candidate must be willing to work with industry partners.
  • Familiarity with industrial IDSs and Firewalls; e.g. Cisco IPX, Checkpoint products, Snort

A full-time position will be available as early as Sept. 4, 2018 and will initially be for two years, with the possibility of renewal for two more years. Salary will depend upon the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant.

Post-doctorate in Cybersecurity

Two full-time post-doctorate positions in the area of cybersecurity are available at the Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity (CIC), University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, Canada. The candidate will work with CIC’s research staff on research, design, and development of techniques and algorithms used in Cybersecurity.

Required skills and experience:

  • A PhD (completed by the start of appointment) in computer science with expertise in network and information security, networking, and other relevant research area.
  • Strong communication and writing skills.
  • Ability to do independent research, as well as to work collaboratively with other team members.

Helpful skills and experience:

  • Application development using Java and Python
  • Technical abilities in systems design, coding, testing, debugging, and maintenance.
  • Demonstrated experience with the design and implementation of large networked and security systems.
  • Familiarity with industrial IDSs and Firewalls; e.g. Cisco IPX, Checkpoint products, Snort

Successful applicants will assist in one or more of the following:

  • Developing novel learning and mining techniques for people-centric security (user profiling), security data analytics, network security, mobile security, malware analysis, botnet detection, analysis and mitigation, security visualization.
  • Designing a platform for collecting actionable security intelligence.
  • Writing and submitting the research results for publication.

The post-doc appointment is for two years and can be extended for one more year depending upon the availability of funding.
