Writing Popular Fiction
CCOM 1114
Throughout the course, I will be covering many aspects of fiction writing, beginning with‘getting in the zone' just like a runner does. We'll flex our creative muscles and do lots of warm ups. We'll talk about believing in yourself, while remembering that most good novels are the result of a lot of re-writing and hair-pulling. We'll explore the dreaded writer's block and I'll give you some tips on how to combat it. We'll discuss writing from the psyche. In other words, mining your memories, the good ones and the not-so-good ones, for ideas and inspiration. We won't ignore the mechanics of writing either; they're important. They are the tools you'll use to build your novel or short story. We'll cover point of view, characterization, pacing, description and so on.
Writing is hard work, but it should also be fun. I'll do my best to make it that. I'm looking forward to meeting you.
