Origami for Beginners

 CCOM 1336

The art of Japanese paper-folding.

You may have seen the now-famous origami cranes that some of us learned to fold in school.  They are just the tip of the iceberg!  Using no more than a piece of paper and some basic fold patterns, you can create everything from animals to ornaments.  More complex structures are often deceptively simple:  just a series of similarly folded single sheets of paper, cleverly joined to make flowers, orbs, or whimsical unnamed forms.

This course will begin with the simplest folds, and take you through a sequence of steps to more complex combinations.  Each class will focus on a few simple models, with plenty of time to master them.  There will be plenty of resources to assist you:  demonstrations, written and diagrammed instructions, links to YouTube videos, and one-on-one instruction.

No prior knowledge is required: the course is for absolute beginners.  Origami draws on many skills (such as simple geometry, spatial relations) but requires none of them.  Bring your patience and a sense of humour!
