D.I.Y. Handy-Woman’s Course

Many women don’t aspire to be die-hard do-it-yourselfers, but it’s good to know what to do when the lights go out, the tap is dripping, hinges and doors are squeaking, or your car is acting up. This four-week course will guide you through the basics of plumbing, electricity, carpentry and auto maintenance, so that you can take care of the normal chores, projects and emergencies that spring up in life. Be helpless no more!

May 21 - Carpentry
learn how to:
undertake simple repairs around the home
fill your tool kit with the basics
hang a picture
fix a chair rung
how to use your measuring tape
the names of various nails and screws
know when it’s time to call a professional
find a wall stud
do's and don’ts

May 28 - Plumbing
learn how to:
turn off the water in your house
repair a leaky faucet
repair loose taps and pipes
unplug a toilet
repair a running toilet
to speak “plumbing” to your plumber
know when to call a profession
do's and don’ts

June 11 -  Electrical 
learn how to: 
understand your fuse box
use breakers
change fuses
wire/rewire a lamp
repair frayed wires
survive a power failure
install a smoke detector
change a battery in your smoke detector
do's and don’ts  
know when to call a professional

June 18 - Car maintenance
learn how to:
check tire pressure
fill tires with air
check fluid levels
add fluids to your car
access tire conditions
when and how to change your tires 
understand car maintenance terminology
how to speak  “car” to your mechanic
create a household/car diary
do's and don’ts

 

Instructor: Joe Flecknell
Dates: (4 weeks) Tuesdays, May 21, 28, June 11 and June 18, 2013
Time: 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Location: Kent Building Supplies, 85 Consumer Drive, Saint John
Course fee: $120 (plus HST)

About the instructor: Joe Flecknell has been employed in the building supplies business for 27 years with experience in plumbing, electrical, contractor sales, point-of-sale and tools. He was also employed in the wholesale plumbing business for 5 years and in the automotive business for 2 years.

Currently employed with Kent Building Supplies in Saint John, Joe has served on their Work Place Health and Safety committee, as both Chair and committee member, for 12 years. He is Kent’s cut shop power tools and equipment trainer and has enjoyed training customers on various home renovation courses.

Joe has experience handling many different types of tools and equipment and looks forward to challenges that involve hands-on problem solving.

He attended Saint John Community College and trained as a heavy equipment mechanic.

Joe volunteers with the Canadian Kidney Foundation. He is also a Cub leader and enjoys teaching and interacting with young people.
