Digital Photography - The Basics

digital camera imageMaking the most of your digital camera requires a sound knowledge of  the basics of digital photography. Professional photographer and experienced instructor Rod Stears will ensure you have an excellent base to get you started and on which to build. You’ll practice what you learn and receive feedback to help you improve.

You will gain a good understanding of the basics of photography, terminology, techniques and solutions for specific challenges that will allow you to unleash your creative potential. Using a hands-on approach you will become comfortable with the different modes and functions of your camera, practice image composition, learn to download, sort and organize your photos, and much more.

The following topics will be covered in class:

  • Camera buttons, dials and key menus
  • ISO, shutter speed and aperture
  • Autofocus options
  • Basics of flash
  • Resolution and how a camera creates a digital file
  • Highlights and Histogram
  • JPEG/NEF (RAW) choice
  • Live browser demo, showing download, sorting, organizing
  • Exposure Modes: From Auto to Manual
  • Creative use of exposure controls
  • White Balance and Lens choices
  • Light, Composition, Framing
  • Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Demonstration
  • Image resolution and how it affects email and prints
  • Sharing - email, print and web

Equipment: SLR, SLR-type, or point and shoot digital camera

About the instructor: Rod Stears operates a professional photography studio specializing   in commercial, product and industrial photography. His clients include   major corporations such as Blue Cross, Aliant, NB Power, Irving Companies and various magazine publications.  As a product photographer he has done work for Sabian Cymbals, Aliant, Canadian Press, Cooke Aquaculture and many others.

Rod has been teaching at the NB College of Craft and Design since 1982. He has also taught at the University of New Brunswick, and the prestigious Maine Photographic Workshop. Rod’s educational background is Art History. Visit Rod’s website at www.rodstears.com and check him out on Facebook.
