Understanding the Night Sky

astronomyHave you ever gazed at a clear night sky and wondered what was out there? If so, this is the course for you. Join us for six nights of lunar exploration and become familiar with planets, stars and constellations.

Using binoculars and telescopes, travel through our Solar System, journey to the far corners of the Milky Way, and see galaxies at distances beyond our comprehension. Learn to locate the International Space Station, Iridium flares, other satellite pass overs and more.

This is a hands-on course that includes outside observing time as weather permits. Personal telescopes not required. Participants should dress for spring weather and muddy ground conditions.

About the Instructor: Don Kelly is a retired science teacher, outdoor education coordinator and science consultant from Oromocto, New Brunswick. He is a founding member of the Dr.William Brydone Jack Astronomy Club, Fredericton, New Brunswick and a member of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada's New Brunswick Centre. He has written for the Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and is the author of the children's book Mary Lou's New Telescope (Le Nouveau Telescope de Chloe), an International Year of Astronomy 2009 project of the RASC. He has earned his Explore the Universe and Messier observing certificates from the RASC.
