Tai Chi for Health

This course is for individuals fifty years or older, or for any adult who wants to learn Tai Chi at a slower pace. The popular Yang Style 24-form of Tai Chi is taught during this 10-week, twice-a-week course, and students learn effective ways to meditate, breath, relax, and move for both health and recreation. It is graceful, easy to learn, and beneficial to people in almost all health conditions. This course covers 10 major topics and related information from both holistic healing and martial arts.

A course outline and handouts are available during the first week of the course. There are twenty 2-hour classes.

Week 1 - Learn the history and philosophy of Tai Chi and health, meditation, and the beginning movements.

Week 2 - Learn how to breath properly with smooth movements and peaceful mind

Week 3 - Learn how to shift body weight from one leg to another with good balance

Week 4 - Learn how to perform circular and round moves with coordination of your limbs

Week 5 - Learn how to perform backward steps with firm stances

Week 6 - Learn how to improve flexibility in waist, hips, shoulders, knees, and ankles.

Week 7 - Learn how to become stronger with good structures

Week 8 - Learn how to balance your body while standing on one leg

Week 9 - Learn how to make a 180-degree turn with a steady body

Week 10 - The feeling of improved health: good blood circulation, flow of chi (vital energy), and rejuvenation, with proper meditation, deep breathing, and graceful movements.

Participants are asked to wear comfortable clothes and sneakers

About the instructor: Yue Ming Chen, originally from China, is a master of Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Kung Fu who has lived in Greater Fredericton and has taught Chinese health and martial arts for over twenty years. People, throughout the province and, from all walks of life have benefited from his courses.

Since 1993 Master Chen has operated the Chinese Health and Martial Arts Center in Fredericton where he focuses on public health.

Master Chen holds a certificate of Master of Wushu and Kung Fu and a certificate of Master of Tai Chi and Qi Gong. He has volunteered extensively as a Tai Chi Qi Gong and Kung Fu instructor, demonstrator and performer with the Multicultural Association of Fredericton, the Chinese Cultural Association of NB and the Chinese Cultural Association of Saint John.      

Master Chen is a role model for those who desire to live a healthy and energetic life.
