Join retired Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister Andy Scott for musings on the political events of the day and discussion of the issues in the news and on our minds.

Andy brings his insight and colourful storytelling to the table around topics such as how to engage the public; Federal/Provincial transfer payments; coalitions and proportional representation, ethics in government, and many other contemporary Canadian political issues.

Expect debate on topics such as the impact of the Conservative majority in Parliament, the rise of the NDP, the demise of the Liberal party, and Quebec without the Bloc.

About the Instructor: Andy Scott was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Fredericton-York-Sunbury in 1993 and was re-elected in 1997, 2000, 2004 & 2006.

Mr. Scott was born in Barkers Point to Gyda and the late Keith Scott. He graduated with a BA with Honors in Sociology in 1979 from the University of New Brunswick. He served as Executive Director of the New Brunswick Liberal Party, Senior Policy Advisor to Premier Frank McKenna, Assistant Deputy Minister in the Department of Intergovernmental Affairs.

During his first term Mr. Scott served on the House of Commons Standing Committees of Health, Human Resources and Human Rights and the Status of Persons with Disabilities. He chaired the National Task Force on Disability Issues, served on the ad hoc Committee on the Clarity Bill and served as Vice Chair on an inquiry on the issue of Privacy.

After his re-election in 1997, Mr. Scott served as Solicitor General of Canada. He served on the Parliamentary Committee on Heritage and the Joint Commons Senate Committee on Official Languages. He also served as the Chair of the Justice and Human Rights Standing Committee.

Between 2000 and 2003 Mr. Scott undertook a study into Research and Development investments by the federal government in Atlantic Canada and Chaired the Justice Committee as it reviewed the Anti-Terrorism Act, the Corrections and Conditional Release Act, the Treatment of Mental Disorders within the Criminal Code, undertook inquiries into Same Sex Marriage and Organized Crime.

In 2003 he was appointed Minister of State (Infrastructure), Minister for five crown corporations including Canada Mortgage and Housing, and Regional Minister for New Brunswick.

From 2004 until 2006 he was Minister of Indian Affairs & Northern Development where he participated in the Indian Residential Schools Settlement and was instrumental in the striking of the Kelowna Accord. Upon retirement from politics Mr. Scott was appointed the Andrews Senior Fellow in Social Policy at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton where he is working on the establishment of the New Brunswick Social Policy Research Network.

Mr. Scott currently serves on the Premier’s Roundtable on Self Sufficiency, is Chair of the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre’s Capital Campaign, is Honorary Chair of the New Brunswick Association for Community Living, is Vice Chair of the New Brunswick Literacy Coalition, is Treasurer of ArtsLink NB, and serves of the Boards of Partners for Youth, the Fredericton YMCA, and Fredericton’s Boyce Farmer’s Market.
Mr. Scott, his wife Denise and sons Noah, Nathan and Nicholas live in Fredericton.
