Birding for Beginners

Explore the fascinating world of bird watching with avid birder Don Gibson. Topics include:
- Identifying species by sight and sound;
- the New Brunswick species list;
- migration patterns;
- best birding spots in Fredericton and throughout the province;
- field guides and checklists;
- the optics of bird watching – binoculars and scopes;
- bird Clubs and organizations;
- bird feeding – year round; and
- bird watching as your new hobby
Instructor: Don Gibson
Dates: 3 weeks, Wednesdays, April 9 - April 30, 2014 + another date to be determined by group for field trip (4 classes total)
Time: 7:00- 9:00 p.m.

Course fee: $100 (+HST)
About the instructor: Don Gibson is a life-long resident of Fredericton. He graduated from Fredericton High School and , in 1969, received a Civil Engineering Degree from the University of New Brunswick.
Don worked for many years for the City of Fredericton Engineering and Public Works Department and retired in 1998.
He has always maintained a strong interest in nature, especially birds, and has been actively birding for about 30 years along with an involvement in the following volunteer (Citizen science) nature projects:
- Christmas Bird Count (compiler for Fredericton count)
- Maritime Breeding Bird Atlas (regional coordinator)
- New Brunswick Owl Survey
- Served three years as president - Fredericton Nature Club
- Served eight years as publisher of Summer issue of "NB Naturalist"
For two years, Don wrote a column for the Daily Gleaner. He has also given many presentations and classroom instruction on birds.
