As Parents Grow Older

This four-week course is available to men and women who are faced with the challenges and joys of being the adult child who is involved with the care of their elderly parent(s).
Participants have the opportunity of sharing with others what is working for you and what is not. Learn about topics such as normal psychological challenges, emotional reactions, drug precautions, and dealing with grief. Dementia and elder abuse and confronting the bureaucracy will also be discussed. Participants learn about available community services, effective communication skills and most importantly, the life of the caregiver. All conversation is confidential.

About the instructor: Sharon van Abbema was employed in Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador and New Brunswick as an elementary school teacher. She has also taught English as a second language.
She worked for many years as a family life educator with Family Services Moncton teaching courses, like Parenting, Effective Step-Parenting, Parent-Child Communication Courses, Systemic Training for Effective Parenting and As Parents Grow Older.
As Parents Grow Older was prepared by the Institute of Gerontology, University of Michigan, with revisions and adaptations by Family Service Moncton.
This course is offered in partnership with the Fredericton Public Library.
