Getting to Know Rome

CNOL

Based on his many years of working in Rome and taking students there, Peter Kent will present six sessions on the delights and fascinations of Rome, from the food and drink, through the familiar sites of ancient Rome, to the work of artists such as Michelangelo, Bernini and Caravaggio, and the development of Rome in the twentieth century under Mussolini’s Fascist regime. Time will also be spent on the role of the Vatican in its Roman context and on the Pope as one of the leading citizens of Rome.
This course will be of interest to those who want to know more about the EternalCity, as well as to those planning a future visit to Rome.

Tuesday, October 23 - "The Layers of Rome: Mussolini and the Modernization of Rome"
Tuesday, October 30 - "A Tale of Two Cities: Papal Rome and the Vatican City"
Tuesday, November 6 - "Food and Drink in Rome: Prosciutto, Spaghetti Carbonara, Pannetone and Espresso"

About the Instructor: Peter Kent is Professor Emeritus of History and a former Dean of Arts at UNB. Since 1990, he has been Director of UNB’s annual Rome Program, which offers UNB courses in Rome for three and six weeks in May and June. He is a teacher of modern European history, with a particular interest in Italian history and he conducts research on the diplomatic history of the Vatican in the twentieth century. His most recentbook deals with the 1968 Strax Affair at the University of New Brunswick.
