Be helpless no more!
Instructor: Tony Short
About the Instructor: Tony Short is a professional engineer with degrees in Mechanical Engineering. He spent the first ten years of his life in England, where he developed an early interest in the do-it-yourself fixing of all sorts of things given that his parents had backgrounds in arts, philosophy and theology and had no hands-on skills when it came to repairing anything related to houses and cars. After immigrating to Canada with his parents in 1951, he had summer jobs such as department store retail sales and surveying for highway construction, and then industrial experience with electrical and mechanical equipment during summers with Ontario Hydro in the Toronto area and also with NB Power in Fredericton.
After completing his degrees, he worked with an electrical equipment manufacturer for two years before joining UNB as a faculty member initially in Mechanical Engineering and then in Forest Engineering where, until his retirement, he taught courses in machine design, thermal engineering and professional engineering practice and ethics. His research interest was primarily related to automatically-fuelled, wood-chip-burning residential central heating equipment, and he served on various Canadian Standards Association technical committees associated with such devices. His hobbies have included building and racing a formula race car, and currently he is restoring a vintage British saloon car, and generally repairing and upgrading technical systems in his and his children's homes in Nova Scotia and British Columbia.
