Ancient World and the Afterlife

This brief overview course will consider the topic of the afterlife in the Ancient world.

Our primary sources will be the early literature of the ancient (Western) world. Beginning with the oldest document of Western literature, the Epic of Gilgamesh, we will trace various and developing views on life, death and the individual's status in the afterlife.
Other texts that will be touched upon will be Homer's Odessey, Plato's Republic, and Virgil's Aeneid. A brief glance at ancient Hebrew views concerning the individual's status in the afterlife will conclude the course.

About the instructor: Dr. Hebb is a graduate of University of King's College in Halifax where he took his BA in history. He continued his studies at Dalhousie University where he completed his MA degree in Classics specializing in the study of the Church Fathers. His thesis concerned St Augustine's theology of interpretation. After years in Parish ministry, Dr. Hebb secured his theological PhD degree from the University of Wales in 2003. His dissertation concerning Loyalist New Brunswick was published the following year by Fairleigh Dickinson UP. In the ensuing five years he researched and published a comparative study of the initial episcopacies of the Anglican Church in America and Canada. Dr. Hebb's research interests include theology, history, philosophy and literature.

He is presently Rector of St Peter's Parish, Fredericton. He is married with two children and lives in Islandview.
