University Programs on the Miramichi is designed to enable qualified individuals to take university level courses in the Miramichi area. The program, offered by the University of New Brunswick (UNB Fredericton) and St. Thomas University (STU) provides an opportunity to complete first year studies in Arts or Business Administration. After completing their first year, students transfer to one of the sponsoring universities (or another university) to complete their degree programs.
University Programs on the Miramichi is an extension of on-campus
programs offered by each of the universities. Any combination of
courses from either or both of the universities may be selected, providing
admission standards have been met. Each university has specific
requirements for their respective programs, so it is important to know
the policies of each university and the differences between them. Students are required to apply for admission to the universities from which they want to take courses.
The three principal advantages to this program are:
Each of the participating universities offers a selection of courses, from which a full or part-time program is constructed. One university is chosen as the "host" institution, although the student is not required to continue their studies at the host university. Any appropriate combination of courses from either or both of the universities may be selected, providing the student has been admitted to each university.
The course offerings are sufficient to allow students to complete their first year of studies from most arts, or business/commerce programs. A limited number of second year courses are also available through the program.
The Program follows the same academic year as on-campus; from
September to April, with face-to-face instruction being offered during
day or evening time slots. These classes will provide the same quality
of education as on-campus by instructors approved by the university
offering the course. Students may register as full-time or part-time.
Fees are paid by course and the cost varies by university.
Some science courses are offered when minimum enrollments
are met; however, students interested in a science program should
contact the Science Faculty advisor for guidance: Dr. Benton (jbenton@unb.ca): 453-4586 to ensure program requirements can be met.
For a list of current course offerings in Miramichi offered through this program,
Most courses feature relatively small classes with onsite professors. A few courses may be delivered through audio-teleconferencing or audio-graphics technologies.
Classes are scheduled at various times throughout the day and evening. Most are held in one three-hour period per week; others may be offered in two or three shorter periods.
This program operates out of the New Brunswick Community College in Miramichi and has been very successful with enrollments. There has been 80 to 120 students each of the past 11 years.
Tuition is paid on a per course basis. Each university establishes and administers its own tuition fees. UNB fees are due the first day of class each term.
