Social Media for Business 101

This one day workshop is aimed at small and medium-sized businesses and entrepreneurs who want to understand how social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest and more are changing the ways organizations and clients interact, leading to new opportunities and new challenges.

The workshop will provide context and theory as well as practical examples and models that can be implemented in any business. Included as part of this workshop:

  • Introduction to social media and a survey of the current social landscape in Canada
  • Exploration of how social media is changing the relationship between businesses and customers and how it's evolving the concept of a brand
  • Using social media for market research and determining which social media sites to concentrate your efforts on
  • Reputation & risk management
  • Developing a social media strategy and measuring return on investment

Instructor

 David Shipley is the enterprise strategy analyst for the University of New Brunswick's Information Technology Services. He is responsible for helping develop and implement UNB's web & mobility strategies as well as IT security awareness. Over the past four years, he founded UNB's corporate social media platforms and helped lead the redevelopment of the university's website, UNB.ca. David was formerly the senior enterprise web content strategist with Communications & Marketing at UNB and used the web and social media to tell UNB's story.

David is a former business journalist with the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal. He is currently pursuing his Masters of Business Administration at UNB, with a focus on social media. David also provides consultative services on web and social media to small businesses and non-profits / not-for-profits.
